Project Overview
Whitman’s Wharf is the primary fishing wharf in the town of Canso. SHM Canada designed an extension to the northwest end of the existing wharf, which was constructed in 2009. When additional expansion was required to meet the growing needs of the local fishing community, SHM Canada was selected by Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) to design the extension structure, and the contract was expanded to include tendering, construction, and post-construction services.
Supporting the growing needs of the Nova Scotia fishing industry with expansion design of Whitman’s Wharf in Canso.
The wharf was designed using reinforced concrete deck and pile caps supported on steel pipe-pile foundation. In order to protect the structure from corrosion, piles within the wharf’s splash zone were encased in fibre-reinforced concrete.
