Construction Inspection

SHM Canada provides resident construction inspection services for marine and heavy civil infrastructure projects. With a team of qualified and experienced inspectors across Nova Scotia, we are able to respond quickly when our clients need our personnel at projects across the province and beyond. These inspectors help to ensure that construction work is carried out in accordance with drawings and specifications, that material quantities are recorded accurately, and that best practices for health and safety are followed on site.

Our construction inspection services are managed by a team of SHM Canada engineers based at our office in Halifax. By deploying well-established procedures for reviewing and submitting daily reports, we support our clients in monitoring project status and in maintaining clear and comprehensive project records.

We have provided construction inspection services to PSPC for a wide range of marine projects in Nova Scotia.

Advantages of Construction Inspection

Construction Inspection offers numerous benefits, making it an essential tool for the proactive management of critical infrastructure. By leveraging advanced technologies, SHM ensures real-time, continuous, and targeted monitoring of structural performance.

Real-Time Monitoring

SHM provides instant access to critical data for engineers and clients, enabling timely analysis and decision-making. Immediate signaling of any changes in structural conditions allows quick responses to potential issues directly in the field, minimizing risks and downtime.

Continuous Monitoring

The system continuously tracks structural responses, ensuring a high level of reliability in assessing the structure's condition. It records data under various conditions, such as fluctuating temperatures and changing load demands, offering a comprehensive view of the structure's performance over time.

Targeted Monitoring

By focusing on key structural components, SHM delivers precise insights into how critical parts behave under stress. This targeted approach enhances accuracy compared to traditional methods, providing a clearer understanding of the overall structural behavior.

Overall Benefits

With the detailed information SHM provides, unnecessary or premature repairs can be avoided, saving significant costs. At the same time, necessary rehabilitation efforts can be prioritized and expedited when needed, ensuring structural safety and longevity.

Enhanced Safety

SHM systems continuously monitor the structural integrity, providing early warnings about potential failures or safety concerns. This proactive approach minimizes risks for users and ensures safer operations for critical infrastructure.

Improved Asset Lifecycle

By offering precise data on structural performance over time, SHM helps in planning maintenance schedules and optimizing the lifespan of assets. It enables better resource allocation and informed decision-making, ensuring long-term sustainability and cost-effectiveness.

Innovative Approaches, Reliable Results

Why Choose SHM Canada?

Innovative Methods & Customized Systems

SHM Canada does not subscribe to a “one SHM system fits all” approach. Our customized systems are targeted to your priorities, so we eliminate costs associated with redundant components and algorithms.SHM Canada uses innovative methods to achieve greater cost efficiency, quality, and safety in the initial planning phases of SHM projects.

We develop customized solutions for each individual project by identifying sensors, data collection and communication methods, storage equipment, and data processing and reporting algorithms that are appropriate for the client’s monitoring objectives. We also develop targeted, cost-effective alternatives to off-the-shelf components.

Complementary Construction Inspection Expertise

Our team’s dual expertise in structural engineering and SHM means that we are able to offer comprehensive start-to-finish SHM packages that include system design, installation, data collection, analysis and interpretation, reporting, and decommissioning. This dual expertise also means that our process is streamlined, targeted, and cost effective. We understand the structures we monitor, so we’re able to design SHM systems that gather data according to your priorities. We then analyze that data in house and report directly to you.

Our team is also skilled in more conventional “analog” methods of structural investigation and assessment, which can complement your SHM package. We also have a demonstrated record of success in structural rehabilitation and design, so are able to go beyond monitoring and assessment to recommend a range of options for addressing potential problems. Alternatively, if we’re able to give your structure a clean bill of health, we can save you the expense of unnecessary repairs—and can help you to devise an asset management strategy to ensure continued structural integrity and safe operations.
